Stroopwafels!

A stroopwafel (directly translating to "syrup waffle") is a thin circular waffle pressed flat on a special waffle iron, giving it a checkerboard pattern. They are stuck together with a sweet caramel, giving it a crispy layers and a sweet oozing center in between the layers. Stroopwafels are usually clipped and shaved at the side, to get a perfect little stack of sugary layers and filling!

The exact history of stroopwafels are unknown, but we do know that it was created in Gouda, Dutch, sometime in the late 1700's-mid 1800's. There isn't a distinct identity the waffle trails back to, but most historians agree it was probably a baker, since the first stroopwafel was made with bakery leftovers. Due to being basically sandwiched crumbs, it was a cheap and easy treat. It was originally branded "Armenkoeken," or "Poor People's Biscuit." By the 19th century there were over 100 stroopwafel bakeries in Gouda.

The stroopwafel is a snack with history, flavor, and in my opinion, a cute appearance.
