Pizzelle!

The pizzelle (pronounced "pits-ell") is the oldest known biscuit/waffle. The pizzelle iron, typically hand-held over a flame or stovetop, imprints a snowflake like pattern on both sides of this waffle. Its crisp and crunchy texture along with its sweet taste is what makes it so enjoyable. Different flavors of this waffle include but are not limited to anise (black liquorice), peppermint, chocolate, vanilla, lemon, and so on. It is often molded to create a bowl shape for various toppings, but can also be molded into a cylinder for cannoli!

Many cultures have their own adaptation or version of the pizzelle, like in Scandinavia pizzelle are known as Lukken, and there's the similar Krumcake. The pizzelle first appeared in the south-central region of Abruzzo, Italy, where the two villages, Colcullo and Salle, still argue over custody of this waffle. This historical waffle is connected to many festivals, mainly "Festival of the Snakes" and "Festival of the monk Beato Roberto da Salle."

Pizzelles are amazing, culture filled waffles and delicious treats to enjoy.
